Q&A with Bree, founder and tea artist

I'm not familiar with osmanthus, what is it?

Osmanthus is one of the most famous flowers in China and Taiwan and is the 'flower of the month' in August as the trees bloom late summer to autumn, although in warmer parts the trees can bloom from all through winter and into spring. A traditional symbol of love and romance, osmanthus flowers have been used in tea for centuries. From the Greek words osma, meaning 'fragrant', and anthos, meaning 'flower', it has a beautifully sweet fragrance and flavour that tends to peaches or apricots. Steeped alone, it imparts a lovely sunflower yellow colour to the water and in this blend, makes the liquor glow.

Can you tell me more about the legend of the osmanthus tree and how it inspired this blend?

Osmanthus is associated with a number of lunar legends in China. Ostensibly, the Moon Palace, or Guanghan Palace, is inhabited by the Goddess of the moon, Chang'e, who was banished after stealing the pill of immortality meant for her husband. Her best friend, the Jade Rabbit sits at the gate of the palace every day pestling the medicine of the immortal osmanthus tree in the hopes of creating an elixir that will help the goddess return to Earth. Granted immortality by the Jade Emperor as a result of his selflessness, he is always too busy pounding away the flowers to make the pill. If you look up at the moon, you can see an outline of the Jade Rabbit pounding away at his medicine.

I like teas that are smooth and not too bitter. How does Autumn Moon taste, especially with its black tea and floral flavours?

It is delightfully light sweetness of the herbals is perfectly balanced with the black tea elements. The result is smooth and elegant just like the autumn moon.
