Yerba maté is a traditional South American drink made from the leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis plant. Like tea and coffee, the leaves contain caffeine as the plant's own natural pesticide and pollinator attractor (even bees like a buzz). It is particularly popular in countries like Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Southern Brazil. The flavor of yerba mate is distinct and somewhat akin to green tea, with a grassy, herbal taste.
