Q&A with Bree, founder and tea artist
Q&A with Bree, founder and tea artist
Q: I'm curious, what is anise hyssop? Is the liquorice flavour at all prominent?
A:
Anise hyssop is a mint family plant, native to Canada and the 'northern' U.S.. It has a history as a culinary treat and is a beautiful addition if you're looking to start your own tea garden. The flowers are bright purple and are immensely popular with bees. The leaves smell and taste like liquorice that has been dipped in a mild mint. In The Earl's Lover, however, the liquorice flavour is very subtle only adding a little more depth to the blend.
Q: Sustainability and quality are important to me. Could you tell me more about where you source your bergamot, lavender, and anise hyssop? Are the ingredients organic or locally sourced?
A:
And these values are super important to us as well. We want our ingredients to align with our mission to Steep Calm, which means it has to feel good in your body too. So, our Earl Grey is sourced as a certified organic black tea with an organic-compliant bergamot flavouring - meaning the flavouring is 100% natural and does not contain any synthetic solvents, carriers or preservatives, the anise hyssop is certified organic, and our lavender is sourced direct-to-farm right here on Vancouver Island. Although the lavender is not certified organic, it is spray-free and the farm uses all organic fertilizers. Plus, their unique lavender production method means that not only is this tea delicious but visually stunning as well.
Q: I often drink tea with milk or make lattés—does The Earl's Lover work well as a latte? Any tips?
A:
Oh yes - you're in for a treat! This tea makes a beau-tea-ful latté. My favourite milk is oat because the silky texture and sweetness suits the tea so well. The 'barista' versions of plant-based milks will work best if you're looking to do a little latté art. But any milk will do. My favourite is a creamy oat milk, maybe with a little local blackberry honey and a dash of real vanilla extract. Pro tip: Plan ahead for your iced London fog ... avoid diluting it by pre-making tea ice cubes - just steep The Earl's Lover and pour into ice cube trays to freeze.
