Warming, flavourful, and easy to make, this tea-infused oatmeal recipe is ideal for anyone looking to combine wellness with comfort food.

Inspired by the classic Indian chai tradition and made with our caffeine-free Sumitra’s Chai, this spiced oatmeal is a soothing and anti-inflammatory breakfast option. It’s a comfort food upgrade that brings together whole ingredients, warm spices, and plant-powered nourishment in every bite.

Why Make Chai-Spiced Oatmeal with Herbal Tea?

Using herbal tea as the base for your oatmeal is an easy way to infuse flavour and add functional benefits to your morning bowl. Sumitra’s Chai includes cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, and cardamom—herbs known to support digestion, reduce inflammation, and gently awaken your system. Plus, star anise has been found to have some amazing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. No sugar or milk required—though you’re welcome to dress it up however you like.

Sumitra’s Chai Oatmeal Recipe Ingredients (serves 1–2):

  • 1 cup steel-cut oats
  • 2 cups water or plant-based milk (oat or almond work beautifully)
  • 2 scoops (3 tsp) Sumitra’s Chai
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds (optional, for texture and fibre)
  • 1–2 tbsp maple syrup or honey (to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt

Optional Toppings:

  • Sliced banana or apple
  • Fresh or dried berries
  • Toasted almonds or walnuts
  • Dollop of coconut yogurt
  • Sprinkle of cinnamon or cardamom
  • Drizzle of almond butter

Instructions:

  1. Steep the Tea:
In a small saucepan, bring your 2 cups of water or plant milk to a gentle boil. Reduce to simmer, add the Sumitra’s Chai, cover, and steep for 10–20 minutes. The longer the steep, the more flavour you’ll extract.
  2. Make the Oatmeal:
Strain out the tea (use a fine mesh kitchen colander, your Steep Calm infuser, or some cheesecloth) and return the liquid to medium heat. Stir in oats, chia seeds (if using), and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5–7 minutes until the oats are soft and the mixture thickens.
  3. Sweeten and Finish:
Remove from heat. Stir in maple syrup or honey and vanilla extract. Taste and adjust for sweetness.
  4. Top and Serve:
Spoon into bowls and layer on your favourite toppings. Try banana slices with almond butter and cinnamon, or berries with coconut yogurt and toasted seeds.
  5. Sip and Savour:
Enjoy with a hot cup of tea (may we suggest First Light or Rooibos Soother?) and a quiet moment to yourself. Morning rituals, elevated.
