A Labour of Love
Longjing, Dragon Well or Dragonwell in Mandarin, is one of China's most celebrated teas from the mist-softened hills surrounding West Lake in Zhejiang Province. What makes it truly extraordinary isn't just the gently sloping terroir, though that alone is something special. It's the 10-hands motion production process that shapes each leaf into its signature flat, needle-like form, coaxing out the tea's natural sweetness and locking in that luminous emerald colour. One glance at the dry leaves and you already know: these were made by hands that care.
Dragon’s Well
Once upon a time, long before this tea had a name, Hangzhou was plagued by drought. But, the local well remained active. The people believed this was due to a dragon who lived inside. A local monk asked the people to pray to the dragon for rain. Eventually, clouds gathered and cool rains fell gently over the land. In the hills above Hangzhou, the tea grown on those slopes was said to carry the dragon's breath. Monks at the mountain temples took notice, cultivating it as a meditative practice, and the name that had always belonged to the well slowly became the name of the tea itself. Dragon Well. A name earned through centuries of reverence, ritual, and rain.
Tasting Notes
Dragon Well doesn't ask for your attention. It earns it slowly and gently, the way all great things do. Smooth and with a soft-sweet nuttiness and a delicate floral undertone, it opens quietly and lingers well past the last sip. Bright, clean finish with no bitterness. Beautiful steeped light for a graceful cup, or slightly longer for a little more depth.
The Intention
This tea is a meditation companion. Pour it into your cup, close your eyes and breathe deeply. Imagine yourself transported to the rolling tea fields, mist hovering over row after row of emerald leaves. Invite your dragon come to you. Ask for their guidance. Perhaps take a ride over the fields and through the clouds. When your cup is empty, thank them for the journey. Carry that ancient wisdom, raw and luminous, with you into the rest of your day.
Let Steeping Calm become the ritual that calls your dragon home.
