Kumari Gold
Kumari Gold
Don't be fooled by the light liquor of this tea on its first steeping. There is beautiful, rich flavour to be discovered! Light floral notes accompany a rich caramel aroma backed up by the gentle and smooth texture with a very light astringency. You will thoroughly enjoy the earthy, lingering finish. This 2nd flush tea is full of golden tips and the tightly rolled leaves beg for multiple infusions, each one providing a different character and personality.
This tea hails from the first certified organic tea garden in Nepal, the Kanchanjangha Tea Estate and Research Center, established in 1984 by Mr. Deepak Prakash Baskota to rid his community of poverty and still runs on a co-operative model.

Q&A with Bree, founder and tea artist
Q: Why is this tea one of your favourites?
A: I am a total push-over for tippy teas. I love the combination of rich, honey and molasses flavours with the gentleness that you get in these sorts of teas.
Q: How are the leaves rolled so that they stay so beautifully intact?
A: The rolling is done over stages, starting with lower and then increasing pressures. Obviously, great care is taken to get the balance between the rolling to release the essential oils and to bring the aromatics to life while avoiding leaf breakage. The process takes about 20-25 minutes.
Q: There seem to be similarities to a very tippy Darjeeling, why would that be?
A: The tea garden is in the foothills of Mt. Kanchanjangha, the third highest mountain in the world, in the eastern part of Nepal. That places it near the western borders of Darjeeling and at a very high altitude of 1,300 - 1,800 meters (4,200 - 6,000 feet). The climatic conditions therefore produce unique and aromatic teas, reminiscent of the more exquisite Darjeelings.
