Experience a tea like no other. Grown at the highest elevation in the world—at the base of Mount Everest—Summit is a black tea with an exquisite character. A limited quantity of this tea is crafted annually, making it a rare treat. The quality of the craftswomanship—yes, this tea is largely farmed and produced by women—is excellent, featuring beautiful full leaves with minimal breakage. The aroma is of honey and earth, with notes of orange blossom and a hint of molasses. The golden-orange liquor draws you in for a smooth sip, replete with soft tannins, hints of cacao, and a light menthol reminiscent of bay and eucalyptus.

A beautiful addition to even the fullest of tea cupboards.

Q&A with Bree, founder and tea artist

Q: What can you tell me more about the tea farm?
A:
Bhakanje Tea Estate sits at an incredible elevation of 2,678 meters (8,786 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest tea farms on Earth. Situated in northeastern Nepal's breathtaking Solukhumbu region, sometimes called the “Gateway to Mount Everest,” it is the only professional tea estate nestled at the base of Mount Everest. Here, tea is woven into the culture.

Q: This tea is produced by women?
A:
Janaki Khadka is the tea maker and factory manager at Bhakanje Tea Factory. The journey to today's tea began in 1998 with the Himalayan Project Nepal (HIPRON), with an objective to uplift the community and pioneer change. Today, many women are farming tea in these mountains, and Janaki Miss is responsible for overseeing production.

Q: How should I make my tea to extract the maximum tea experience and essence?
A:
As you can see, this tea is the 'curly' sort, with the leaves fairly tightly rolled. I recommend steeping in a glass teapot, press or jar so you can watch the magic as the leaves unfurl and surrender to the water. Being grown at high elevation, this tea has a complex character that reveals itself best in high-quality water. If your tap water contains too many minerals or is treated with chlorine, you’ll want to filter it, but try to avoid bottled water and absolutely never use distilled water—there is no sparkle in these waters, and your tea will taste 'flat.' For 'Western style' tea, use about 1.5 tsp (2.75 g tea) to 1 cup water just off the boil. Steep for about 4 minutes or, if watching in a glass vessel, until the leaves fall to the bottom and the liquor is a lovely orange. Drink from a small vessel so that the aroma is fresh with each sip. In the spirit of Nepal, share with friends and family for the best tea experience.
