Q: I would love to get my kids into tea. Do you have any tips?
A:
I love it when people introduce their kids to tea. Tea is a beautiful way to embrace the beauty and challenges that life brings—from scraped knees to a hard day at school to fun with friends. Teaching our kids how to calm, center, ground, and refocus is a gift that will benefit them their whole life. So my first tip is to start as early as possible! I started my own kids on rooibos tea around the age of 1, diluting the tea with water according to their size (3/4 water, 1/4 tea for 1/4-sized humans, 1/2 and 1/2 for 1/2-sized humans, up to full strength by age 10 to 15). Cool it down to body or room temperature for the littlest ones—similar to how you used to make milk. Keep in mind that most kids are much more sensitive to temperature than we are, so cooler tea avoids burnt tongues, which might make them nervous about tea and lead them to avoid it. Make it part of their morning routine—making the tea together (they’ll be able to do it themselves soon, I promise!) and adding it to their water bottle once steeped, with cold water added on top so they can drink it right away. And of course, you can integrate it into your bedtime rituals—e.g., bath, tea, teeth, story, sleep. Peaceful dreams for the whole family.
Q:I love trying new teas, but I’m curious about how versatile this blend is. Do you think it would work well as an iced tea or in different recipes? How do you usually enjoy it?
A:
This blend is incredibly versatile and works beautifully in different forms. While it’s perfect as a warm, soothing cup of tea, it also makes a really great iced tea—you can make a large batch and refrigerate it, or just steep it a little stronger (either using twice the tea or letting it steep for 20 minutes or more) and pour it directly over ice. You can even add a slice of lemon or a touch of honey if you want to enhance its natural sweetness.
Another fun idea is to use it as a base for tea popsicles. Again, steep the tea at about double strength, let it cool, and pour it into popsicle molds. Try adding some fresh berries for a little extra fun.
Personally, I love enjoying it warm in the late afternoon as part of my transition from the relative calm of the workday to the busyness of family evenings. But I also love it as a mocktail base when I'm catching up with a friend mid-week.
